How can we celebrate All Souls Day if we can’t visit the graves?

This is a transcript (Filipino and English) of the video below.

Amen.

How to celebrate All Souls if we can’t visit the graves? For a fruitful life, join me in another episode of Coffee and Prayer.  Kape’t Pandasal [Coffee and Prayer]

It is difficult to celebrate All Souls Day if you can’t visit the graves because of Covid restrictions. Visiting will not only endanger your life, but also that of others. How can we celebrate All Souls in this situation? Let us return to the reason why we have this tradition. In different cultures and beliefs, importance is given to ancestral recognition and honor as a form of gratitude. We owe to them who we are today.

That is why in All Souls, we gather as friends and family. The community helps in the healing and accepting process of death. We pray for the repose of their souls free from human pain and suffering. Finally, we refresh our memories by remembering them. These three elements are at the heart of All Souls Day and they are not lost when we are physically distant.

To gather, we can use various video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Messenger, etc. To pray and remember, we can create a photo altar for those who died, including memories in our social media accounts. We can light a candle or add flowers. If you can’t do these, it is still acceptable.

Let us pray. O Lord, grant eternal peace to all who died, especially meaningless deaths such as victims of extra-judicial killings (EJK) and this pandemic. Amen.
