On Mark 9,32: Don’t be afraid to ask

This is a transcription of the video below.

Huwag matakot magtanong.

May kasabihan,

“Civilization is wrought by the question mark.”

Umuusad ang agham dahil marami pang kailangang unawain. Umuunlad ang teknolohiya dahil patuloy ang tanong: “Paano ba natin gawing madali ang ating buhay?” May katuturan ang Theology, dahil marami pa tayong tanong ukol sa Diyos.

Kaya huwag matakot magtanong.

Amen.

What is your favorite punctuation mark? Is it a period, a comma, an exclamation point, or a question mark? Mine is the question mark. When Jesus predicted his death and resurrection on the third day, Mark, wrote, “but they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask Him.” (Mark 9:32)

But it is important to ask a question. I understand that it is difficult to ask because we do not want to appear stupid, or we are afraid to open a bag of worms. However, to understand, we need to be clarified with things we cannot comprehend. There is a quote that says,

“Civilization is wrought by the question mark.”

Science progresses because there are still mysteries to be solved. Technology advances because we continually ask, “How can we make our lives easier?” Theology has meaning because we have questions about God.

Thus, do not be afraid to ask. To be inspired in the things that we do, Simon Sinek, wrote, “Start with Why?” But we must accept that not all questions have answers, like “Why did my dad die early?” Sometimes the question leads to more questions. And some answers are unexpected like the negative result of a science experiment.

If you were one of the disciples, what would you ask Jesus?

Let us pray. Lord, enlighten our minds and hearts so all of thoughts and actions are all according to the right understanding of your will. Amen.
