How do we embody values?

This is a transcription of the video below: both in Filipino and English.

Amen.

Embody your values. For a fruitful life, join me for another episode of “Coffee and Prayer.”

A few weeks ago, McDonald’s BTS meals have been popular. I thought the product has an “added value.” Not only will I get McNuggets, but I thought that the proceeds will go to a beneficiary personally chosen by the Kpop band, BTS. According to McDonald’s however, it is a marketing strategy. They are selling celebrity orders such as those of Travis Scott, J. Balvin and Michael Jordan. Do you remember the McJordan burger of yore? As their go-to-food of choice, they prove to us that McDonald lives up to its promise to us: the quality of their products.

Do we also embody our faith in the daily choices that we make? Values development starts with inculcation. Through the example of their lives, parents, friends, society, and culture instill values on children. As they grow, children begin to choose right from wrong. Choosing now involves their heart. In misunderstandings, for example, their response will involve their thoughts and feelings, because their choice of action determines the state of their important relationships such as those of their families and friends.

Constant choosing the value further helps us embody them. You will know this because others will describe you as “a kind and helpful person.” You become the value you embody. Jesus said, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?” Like the BTS meal of McDonald’s, can people refer to you as the example of faith-life?

Let us pray: As the Light of the world, O Lord, light our way so that we may enlighten others. Amen.
